NEW REPORT DETAILS CUMMINS’ APPROACH TO CLIMATE CHANGE, RACIAL EQUITY AND COVID-19

Cummins Inc.released the company’s 18th annual Sustainability Progress Report, including for the first time the racial and ethnic makeup of Cummins’ U.S. workforce in addition to special reports on the company’s response to COVID-19 and its pursuit of an innovation-focused path to carbon neutrality.

The 2020 report also includes stories on the successful conclusion of Cummins’ 2020 environmental sustainability goals, the company’s record year for global patents, Cummins’ record low Incidence Rate in health and safety and its record $22 million in community grants. In addition, the report includes a new section on cybersecurity amid the growing number of cyber threats around-the-world.

Cummins’ holistic approach to environmental, social and governance (ESG) excellence once again served the company well in 2020, enabling it to respond effectively to the challenges presented by the pandemic while making progress on critical concerns such as climate change and racial equity.

The year will likely be remembered for the devastating impact of COVID-19, and the report includes plenty of detail on the company’s collaborative approach to safely reopening as well as its efforts to help communities recover and get medical professionals the protective equipment they needed to do their jobs. Cummins, however, did not let the virus limit what it could accomplish in 2020.

Cummins also did not let the pandemic keep it from taking a leadership role on addressing climate and other environmental issues. The report explores Cummins’ progress on its principal 2020 environmental goals. The company achieved goals to reduce its use of water and partner with customers to reduce the greenhouse gases emitted by its products in use. The company also exceeded goals for sites achieving Cummins’ standards for water neutrality and zero disposal.

Even when it fell short of a goal, the company made significant progress. For example, while it narrowly missed reaching its 2020 goal of raising the company’s recycling rate to 95%, it still achieved a company record of 93%. The company also didn’t reach its goal of a 32% reduction in energy intensity (energy use adjusted by hours worked) by 2020 but still achieved a 27% reduction compared to a baseline year of 2010.

Cummins will now turn its attention to the 2030 goals included in the company’s PLANET 2050 environmental sustainability strategy. The report covers Cummins’ exciting start to a low carbon future, including the company’s first virtual Hydrogen Day, where it outlined its work with fuel cell electric technology as well as electrolyzers critical to the production of green hydrogen, a promising low-carbon fuel.
